About the former ME Society of B.C.

The Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Society of British Columbia [MEBC] was formed in 1988 as a non-profit association in order to help patients and their families cope with the physical and emotional strains arising from ME. MEBC is a registered charity and relies on volunteers and donations to carry out its operations.

Vision
Our Vision is to have accurate diagnostics and effective treatments for ME, and comprehensive support for sufferers.

Mission
Our Mission is to support the ME community of British Columbia, Canada.

MEBC defines the ME community as all those afflicted with ME (Myalgic Encephalo-myelitis) or related illnesses such as FM (Fibromyalgia) or MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivities), their family and friends, and the people who may help in their professional capacity, particularly health care workers, government officials, and legal advocates.

Goals
MEBC's goals, in order of importance are to:

  1. Provide practical and emotional support for the ME community
  2. Develop and promote educational initiatives and materials
  3. Provide or facilitate representation for the ME community to the medical field, government and the public.

In order to achieve these goals MEBC has developed the following strategies:

  • Coordinate people to work in support of the ME community through non-profit organisation.
  • Enlist the support of able people, including family and friends, government and industry, and volunteer & community organisations.
  • Employ accountable and resposible staff.
  • Seek out and develop educational resources.
  • Provide a support network and peer counselling.
  • Identify key problems of people with ME and develop programs in response.
  • Provide or arrange for practical support for people in need.
  • Raise awareness in the media, in government, and in health care.

If you or your family/friends have any questions about the volunteer opportunities with MEBC, please contact

Other projects are aimed at increasing recognition of ME in conjunction with Awareness Day on May 12th, and to pursue funding so that we may employ staff to run MEBC's basic operations under the leadership of the Board of Directors.
