Let your voice be heard for ME!

Be a part of our MLA Video Campaign

(pronounced: em-ee. ME is the official way that we are striving to “brand” Myalgic Encephalomyelitis - who can pronounce that mouthful! Please use the term ME, not CFS or chronic fatigue syndrome, because we know all too well the deep negative connotations that are associated with the term “chronic fatigue syndrome” that act as a disservice to those in our community.)

Use your voice. Tell your story. Demand for better.

This is your opportunity to speak directly to your Member of the BC Legislative Assembly (MLA) as one of their constituents, and tell them what equitable health care looks like to you as someone whose life is affected by ME.

We understand that during these unusual times it might feel futile and like our message will be drowned out by the intense focus on the Covid-19 Pandemic. However, this pandemic has shown that change in our society is possible. Perhaps now, more than ever, is the time to reach out to our government and demand that some of these new services and options be kept once the pandemic is over.

Video submission deadline

We are launching our campaign on May 12th. We encourage you to submit your video to us as soon as possible to make them available for viewing by any MLAs visiting our site during May Awareness Month.

This campaign will be ongoing throughout the year.

How to share your videos & images with MLAs

As part of our Millions Missing BC 2020 online campaigns, we have created a page on our website: BC MLAs - meet your ME constituents! The goal of that page is to create a space where MLAs can meet some of  their ME constituents and hear their video messages, leave written messages of their own, and learn of the dire unmet needs of British Columbians living with ME.

Step 1: record your video

Using your smart phone, tablet, computer or other personal device, video record your message.

  • Plan what you want to say. See the side bar for ideas.

  • Record a maximum 60-second video message speaking directly to your MLA (60 seconds makes it more shareable).

  • Make sure the lighting is good. Avoid lighting yourself from behind as this will cause your image to look more like a silhouette. Make sure there is lighting in front of your face.

  • Make sure the audio is clear.

  • Introduce your name, how long you’ve been sick with ME for, and then give ONE concrete example of what equitable health care looks like to you (because that is what we are striving for: equitable health care for all British Columbians)

Step 2: Note your provincial riding and the name of your MLA

Step 3: Share your video with us. There are a number of ways you can do this.

Upload your video to YouTube

  • In YouTube, edit the details for your video:

Looking for a talking point for your video message?

Choose one of these.

With a maximum of 60 seconds,

we suggest you pick ONE issue/demand that resonates with you to focus your message on.

  • Temporary measures that have been put in place for Covid-19: what should stay because it will benefit the ME community? Examples include:

  • Making virtual health care (telehealth) more easily accessible (which requires adequately compensating health care practitioners for virtual appointments in order to incentivize them)

  • Subsidized home support services such as those currently being provided for seniors.

  • Creating an ME billing code. We've been told this was not possible, but in response to the pandemic, temporary billing codes have been put in place for Covid-19. So why not for ME?

  • Better financial support. The government has stepped in now to help those who’ve lost the ability to work due to the pandemic. What about those who’ve lost the inability to work due to disability from ME?

  • Work-from-home accommodations and job protection. The government has mandated that employees can take unpaid, job-protected leave related to COVID-19 if they’re unable to work for certain specified reasons. Similar accommodations should be made for ME.
