Join Millions Missing BC on Saturday, May 10, from 1 - 2:30 p.m. for the second annual Millions Missing BC demonstration. Community members can join in person in Jack Poole Plaza, downtown Vancouver, or from the comfort of their own bed via livestream.
Featuring a line-up of outstanding speakers including patients, a doctor, a researcher, and a caregiver, the day will be an opportunity for community members to meet and connect, and to participate in a postcard campaign to send their message to elected officials.
In 2024, a letter with nearly 200 stories from people across the province was sent to Health Minister Dix , Premier David Eby, and Provincial Health Officer Bonnie Henry. Neither responded, and David Eby’s office where the demonstration was held was closed for the day. “That the government didn’t respond really underscored our whole point!” explains Sophie, an organizer with Millions Missing BC. “We’re holding a protest about a neglected illness and the provincial government didn’t even deign to acknowledge us. It was beyond frustrating.”
This year, participants are invited to write their message on individual postcards which will be sent to elected officials by Millions Missing on your behalf. One letter may be ignorable, but what about hundreds? Those who cannot make it in person can fill out this online form to have their message sent.
“Often with ME, we disappear from the world due to our limitations,” says Katy, an organizer who joined Millions Missing BC this year. Sending your message via postcard, joining via livestream, or attending in person, is one way to stand out and fight back against the invisibility of ME.
“Last year it was so powerful to connect with the community and hear the stories of others. I made new friends and connections that day and being there in person really helped me feel less alone with these very isolating conditions.” Inspired, Katy joined the Millions Missing team this year, saying “I was so moved by the event last year and wanted to offer my support this year to keep the momentum going!”
This sentiment is echoed by Sophie who says, “feeling the strength of our community come together last year was so powerful. I’m excited to grow that momentum and show our provincial officials that people with ME cannot continue to be neglected and ignored.”
