Severe ME Awareness Day was established by the “25 Percent ME Group” in 2013 to draw attention to the plight of those suffering from severe Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME). The date, August 8th, was chosen in honor of Sophia Mirza, a severe ME patient who tragically lost her life to the disease.
In British Columbia alone, over 77,000 people live with ME. Of these, around 25% are house-bound or bed-bound, and approximately 10% endure life in near-total darkness, confined to their beds, and often struggling to speak, move, or eat.
Today, August 8, we join the ME|FM Society of BC and ME communities worldwide to observe International Severe ME Awareness Day. In British Columbia, we remember those who have lost their lives to ME over the past year and bring much-needed attention to the thousands who continue to suffer in pain and isolation due to this debilitating illness.
As we honor and remember those with severe ME, the ME|FM Society of BC reaffirms its commitment to advocating for increased research, improved medical care, and heightened education and awareness about this devastating condition. We pledge to continue our collaborative efforts with the government to enhance the lives of British Columbians living with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.
On this day, let’s come together in solidarity, raising our voices for those who cannot, and pushing forward to bring hope to those affected by severe ME.
