New Ways to Connect
Sometimes you want to hear how other people get through the day, or share a little of what yours has been like. Maybe you have a question, a frustration or a small win. And sometimes you just want a little company and a reason to laugh.
Living with ME, FM or Long COVID can leave fewer chances for these ordinary moments. Work, hobbies, outings and casual conversations may become limited or disappear altogether. Our earlier article on isolation and the power of peer support explored how much connection matters to our community.
But wanting company and being able to take part are two different things.
A little at a time, when it works for you

Even an online gathering can be out of reach. A support group or webinar means being available at a set time, following a conversation, and having enough energy for it that day.
A short social media post asks less of you. You might read it hours after it appears, leave a few words the next day or tap a heart and move on. When symptoms and energy are unpredictable, that flexibility matters: there's no meeting to miss and no need to keep up with everything. These small interactions won't always be manageable either, but they offer another way in when they are.
What conversation can make possible

A simple question can open up a lot: tips people have found useful, times they've felt understood, frustrating moments, unexpected joys, and things they wish others knew. There's room for serious conversations, but also for humour and life hacks.
Reading other people's comments can make a subject easier to talk about. Someone might put words to a feeling you've struggled to describe, or offer a perspective you hadn't considered. You might recognize part of your own experience, or discover how different someone else's daily life is. Over time, you start to recognize people, look forward to hearing from them, and feel welcome even when your experiences are different.
You don't need to jump in with your whole story. A few words can be enough, and simply following along is being part of the community, too.
Making room for both

Our Facebook and X posts will keep doing what they do well: news, announcements, events and links to resources, research and ways to get involved. But a useful resource answers a question; it doesn't leave much room for the personal details, uncertainties and everyday experiences people want to explore together.
So we're adding a second kind of social media. Come mid-October, our new and updated Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and YouTube accounts will make more room for informal exchanges, creativity and everyday life. Choose what interests you and what you have energy for.
Coming mid-October—not ready yet!
Please wait for our announcement and account links.
In the meantime, for those who enjoy live conversation, our social support groups and hangouts offer another way to connect.
